Red Light Jazz is an initiative of local entrepreneurs to highlight the rich tradition Amsterdam has as a true jazz city.
Various jazz-events are happening every year in the capital of The Netherlands, but an annual jazz festival of more days in various locations was missing.
Red Light Jazz is remembering Chet Baker, who lost his life in 1988 by falling out of the window from his hotelroom atHotel Prins Hendrik, and will take you from there to the Sint Olofskapel, Café Casablanca, Brouwerij de Prael, Paleis van de Weemoed, Koffiesalon Quartier Putain, Bar Restaurant Living Mata Hari, Bethany’s Jazz Club, Het Bethaniënklooster and Theater Casa Rosso.
The Red Light Jazz Foundation, the Dutch Jazz Archive, the Conservatory of Amsterdam, recordlabel Top Notch, as well as Amsterdam World Jazz City 2014 and other participants in Red Light Jazz like to show the public the other, more cultural side of the Red Light District, which has been connected to jazz since the thirties and fourties. When jazzmusic came over from the States it started to root in the old part of Amsterdam, at Casablanca, the Cotton Club and other jazz clubs, and was soon spread all over the country.
