Chamber jazz of the most charming sort that is all about ‘the love of sound’ according to prominent Dutch daily, De Volkskrant. Joris Roelof’s (clarinets) Chambertones, Jesse van Ruller (guitar) and Clemens van der Feen (bass) are one of the warmest ensembles in Dutch jazz. Maarten Hogenhuis is the biggest alto sax talent to emerge in the burgeoning Dutch jazz scene and is one of the most active musicians in the Netherlands. This concert is part of the BIMHUIS AT FELIX &FOAM, a series of adventuresome summer concerts at Felix &Foam, Keizersgracht 324, hosted by the Bimhuis. The Chambertone’s debut album in 2010 has all the warmth of a cozy fireplace and heralded a new departure for these three strong jazz musicians somewhere between country, gypsy music and chamber music. Their second album too, Ninth Planet (2012) is heartwarming. And not just because of the oak wood sound packed in friendly compositions, the infectious interaction among the musicians move the listener and have gained in resonance. This trio is not out to show off virtuosity although all the musicians have plenty of technical proficiency at their disposal. Think more about a subdued group sound, modest and congenial. “What you hear is the love of sound. Not only in the three sonorous colors of their instruments but especially in the ensemble itself.” (De Volkskrant in a four star review of Ninth Planet, 2012) Alto sax player Maarten Hogenhuis (1986), winner of the ‘Best Soloist’ category in the 2012 Dutch Jazz Competition, is one the super talented young stars of the burgeoning Dutch jazz scene. Hogenhuis is “a guy with a strikingly mature performance and headstrong ideas,” according to De Volkskrant in a four star review last year. In both trio and quartet line-ups he lets us hear with a relaxed and fresh delivery that bebop, hardbop and swing idioms have all proved to be endless sources of inspiration even for the new generation of jazz musicians. With his trio, Hogenhuis won the 2013 Keep an Eye Jazz Award for ‘best soloist’ as well as group. In addition, Hogenhuis is active in various popular groups that include the crème de la crème of Dutch jazz, such as the power jazz band Bruut! (Brute), and guitarist Reiner Baas’ group, The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble. “We can hear with his vivacious sound, technical proficiency and fresh open approach a musician who allows himself to be inspired by others, but especially who blows new life into swing with the impetuosity of youth heralding a new era.”
