HUMAN RIGHTS WEEKEND

Human Rights Watch presents in collaboration with De Balie the third edition of the Human Rights Weekend. Films and debates on human rights and everything you need to know about the Middle East and North Africa. Meet international filmmakers, Human Rights Watch researchers, photographers and journalists.
Topics include “emergency cinema” in Syria, revolution and repression in the digital age, the Islamic State, Libya, front-line journalism, conflict and refugees, and Egypt’s forgotten revolution.
The official spoken language for all programs will be English.

FRIDAY 30 JANUARY OPENING NIGHT 20:30 – 22:30
Opening night & screening of "Syria: Bullets and Countershots - A Selection of Short Films by the Abounaddara Collective". Marcel Kurpershoek (senior fellow in Arabic poetry and culture at New York University Abu Dhabi and former Netherlands special envoy for Syria) and Sarah Leah Whitson (Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch) will discuss the greatest current challenges faced in Syria. Thereafter, "Syria: Bullets and Countershots - A Selection of Short Films by the Abounaddara Collective", will be screened. Abounaddara is a unique award-winning collective of Syrian filmmakers celebrating ordinary Syrians in their everyday lives. The films show the other side of the armed conflict that have been the media’s main focal point.
With Charif Kiwan (spokesperson for the Abounaddara Collective), Ole Solvang (senior emergencies researcher at Human Rights Watch) and Anna Neistat (recently appointed senior director for research at Amnesty International). Moderated by Andrea Holley (Deputy Director Human Rights Watch Film Festival). From 22.30 onwards dance music from the MENA region by Mevrouw van Bemmel & HighD.
